From Hive to Jar: Hive Education and Extraction Event with The Roof Crop Foundation Thursday, July 30th 5:30 - 7:00pm
Experience urban beekeeping firsthand at this hands-on workshop. Watch bees at work in a live hive, then dive into the honey extraction process. Our beekeeper will demonstrate uncapping, spinning, and then everyone will get a chance. Culminating with tasting the raw honey straight from the source. Chat with our beekeeper about hive dynamics and sustainable management practices. You'll leave with your own 8oz jar of honey as a keepsake. Set outdoors among active hives, this immersive event supports The Roof Crop Foundation's mission. Perfect for curious minds ready to connect with nature's most productive pollinators.

AJ (they/she) is an urban farmer and educator, working and growing in the field for over 10 years. Formerly of Michigan, they studied organic horticulture, urban planning, and how the overlap impacts food access. They have designed and built school gardens, as well as custom programs for integrating the natural world into the classroom. They hold certifications in urban agriculture, food safety practices, and pollinator stewardship.
Since moving to Chicago in 2023, AJ has established a comprehensive network of local farmers and food industry professionals. Her work is rooted in using urban food production as a means for progressing social and environmental justice. They believe that feeding people is the foundation for building meaningful change.
While working with the Roof Crop Foundation, AJ has revitalized their apiary of over 50 honey bee hives across the city of Chicago. Their efforts are improving the quality of life for the bees, and educating community groups on the environmental and economic impacts of pollinators.
