Madder is a root traditionally cultivated throughout many parts of the world including India, Southeast Asia, Turkey, Europe, South China, parts of Africa, Australia and Japan and is one of the oldest known dyestuffs. Madder produces many colors by manipulating the dye process. The roots are the part of the plant from which the dye is extracted and can take 3-5 years to produce a mature harvest.

The Roof Crop planted a bed of madder in the spring of 2024 and we hope to begin harvesting from it in the fall of 2026.

Cutch is the ground wood of a Acacia catechu tree common to India, Burma, Indonesia and Peru.

Both dyestuffs were sourced from Maiwa. Maiwa works directly with farmers sustainably cultivating natural dyes throughout the world and we trust them to provide materials that meet or exceed our quality and sustainability goals.
